So, they know people have a problem that is frustrating them, and therefore they try to convince them why they're the right solution, or offer them discounts, or tell them how great their product and company is.

And yes, that might have some success, but not the level of success of something deeper: Revealing the story and the journey of the buyer. Showing them there is a meta-story at play, which instantly injects hope, creates understanding, and subconsciously pushes people into action.

Outline: Questions + Analogies

* What is a Story?

Most people who think they don't know how to tell a story make a simple mistake: They just say a list of positive or neutral things one after another, thinking that a choronological recounting of events is all what a story is: "I woke up in the morning, then I brushed my teeth, then I turned on my laptop, and afterwards I read my emails and I answered them one by one, then I called to order some Sushi"
Why does that bore the listener?
Because there is no Drama. Drama is what makes a story be a story.

* What does this mean?

It simply means: For a list of events to be a story, a hero has to be in a bad situation, then move towards a good situation. They have to be in a bad state, then go on a long or short journey towards a good state.

* Ok, but how is that relevant for marketing?

Oh, it is VERY relevant. For 2 reasons:

(1) Understand that any story, no matter how truthful, is NOT reality. There is an infinite number of ways to explain reality and infinite things going on that are affecting what is happening at every moment in time. However, that totally overwhelms the brain. The brain needs a structure it can understand so that it absorbs the information it needs right away. And the story structure is the structure the brain has optimized in order to absorb information in the easiest way.

(2) When people have a problem, they try to solve it and they more often than not fail. Because if they knew how to solve it, they wouldn't let it become a problem in the first place.

As Einstein said: "We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them."

Then, people despair. They feel they are stuck, with no way out, and almost give up. And whatever emotional state people are feeling deeply, they subconsciously feel as if it will continue forever. This is why depression happens, where people feel they will be stuck in a rut forever. And it is why gamblers when they win, they will get excited, expect to keep winning forever, and take more and more risks until they lose it all.

Anyways, the reality of most people in most markets is that they are stuck, they tried to solve their problems and failed, and many of them will search for a solution but at the same time feel their emotions pulling them down, leading them into despair, and are lethargic and on the verge of totally giving up. Most people in your market don't buy, and that isn't because of competition, it's because they simply give up. A few try buying something once, it doesn't work for them, which pushes them over the edge into giving up.

* So, how does this relate to marketing?

Well, if you try to convince people, to bedazzle them, to use tricks on them, to brag and toot your own horn, to push them with urgency into buying -- and yes, some of these can be useful in some situations -- but just doing these typical online marketer tactics is like poking at the cadavre of a dead animal, it won't have any effect. Most people in most markets have tried, tried, tried, often on their own through their own devices, and failed, and have basically given up.

However, when marketing is a meta-story, things become different:

Why? Because BY DEFINITION, a story means there will be a solution, and there are good times ahead.

A story, BY DEFINITION, means that their current bad situation isn't forever. But a temporary part of their journey.

A story, BY DEFINITION, gives them hope for a better future. Because stories aren't stupposed to hace a sad ending, stories are supposed to have a good ending.

People are programmed to expect heros in stories to face challenges, to have hard times, to almost give up, to face situations where the odds are against them... Then, something happens, they overcome those odds, and live happily ever after...

A story allows your prospects to feel they are the hero, and that their "happily ever after" is nearer than they expect!

Yes, it's possible in a story to have the hero try many things, fail, fail, fail again, test different theories, and slowly find the solution...

However, by making it about THEM solving it will simply sabotage their progress.

When people come to you in need of help, they have tested their own abilites, have failed, and don't trust themselves anymore...

Therefore, they need someone else to help them. They need something outside them to change them or give them a new ability or arm them in a way where they become more, and able to overcome all the challenges.

They need a mentor, or a sacred weapon, or a group of allies to allow them to win the day, and get their "happy ever after"...

* So how to use this to turn Marketing into a Meta-Story?

First of all, it is a Meta-Story because it's not simply telling some anecdote or story within your marketing.

This is beyond all that. This is about implying and creating your marketing in a way where you structure their reality in this way, where you are basically the narrator of this metastory:

(1) You narrate all the details of their bad situation, so they feel understood by you and wish for more. Because all stories begin with a narration of how bad things were at first.

(2) You speak of yourself as the Guide that will make this story possible for them, and show your wisdom and help by giving them some very useful tips and tools so that they believe you are the real deal.

(3) You talk to them a lot about their "happily ever after," the future they can have once they solve this problem, and all the happiness possible in their lives.

And simply, by having this structure in mind and using it, you become much more than a typical episodic marketer who is trying to push psychological buttons in order to make a sale.

By introducing them to their story, and how their bad situation isn't permanent, but a natural step on their journey, a common part in every story, their brain lights up, picks up on this, and hope ensures BIG...

They will feel like a hero in a story, which implies that change is coming, the solution will be found, and that good times are inevitable, they will happen no matter what, there is no reason to be depressed or to give up!

That's the meta-structure, the meta-story that turns your marketing from average into world class.

So begin thinking about this in your market and using it today.

Guideline Reminder

And remember: Don't sell. Bond. Storybond.

Prime Directive Reminder

Because human bonds are and will always be the deepest and most powerful competitive advantage.

Personal Benefit:

And when you begin to use this meta-story as the basis for your marketing, people will never see you as a spammer, but will see you as a prophet of hope, someone who brightens their day and lets them know everything will be okay...
Because, really, what people need right now is hope: without hope, their bodies will feel heavy, their creativity will be stifled, and they stop trying. This basically ensures they never take action or get any results.
But when you're the meta-storyteller who brings them hope by showing they're in a story and how their success is inevitable because of the inevitability of all stories unfolding, they light up, hope fills them with energy, and they can actually do something to change their lives.

Legacy Benefit:

Then, they will always remember you as the bearer of good news, the guide who changed their lives, the person who chose to not be a typical marketer who makes them feel like a wallet they want to empty, and instead elevate yourself to the metaphysical posture of the narrator of their story and the guide on their journey, and that gives YOU the kind of self-esteem and feeling of self-worth very few people in the world could ever feel!

YOU CAN DO IT!
